When was the last time you woke up feeling completely like yourself—clearheaded, energetic, rested, and ready for the day?
For many people, fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, and persistent pain don’t appear all at once. They creep in gradually until eventually we start telling ourselves, “I guess this is just what getting older feels like.”
In this episode of Dr. Earl’s Insights, Dr. Earl explores another possibility: sometimes what we experience as dysfunction may actually be an adaptation that has lasted too long.

00:48 – Common Doesn’t Always Mean Normal
Fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, and persistent discomfort may be common, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they should automatically be accepted as normal.
The body is constantly adapting to physical, emotional, environmental, and biological demands. Ideally, that process follows a rhythm: challenge → adapt → recover → balance. When challenges continue without enough opportunity for recovery, however, the body may remain in an adaptive state longer than it was designed to.
01:45 – When Adaptation Becomes Dysfunction
What we call “dysfunction” may sometimes begin as something useful.
Your body changes its physiology to help protect you during a challenge. But what happens when the challenge passes and the body continues operating according to the same protective pattern?
A response that was helpful temporarily can become problematic when it persists. That changes the question from “What is wrong with my body?” to “What has my body been adapting to?”
02:37 – Why Survival Mode Uses So Much Energy
Your body has limited resources, and it constantly prioritizes where those resources are needed most.
When the nervous system perceives ongoing demand, energy may be directed toward protection and adaptation. Over time, that can leave fewer resources available for processes such as deep sleep, digestion, mental focus, tissue repair, and recovery.
This is one reason symptoms that seem unrelated may sometimes appear together.
03:29 – Protection vs. Healing
The nervous system is constantly evaluating what is happening inside and outside the body and adjusting physiology accordingly.
When the body continues receiving signals that it needs to remain prepared for a challenge, it may have difficulty fully shifting toward the processes that support restoration and healing.
Understanding why that protective response remains active is an important part of knowing what to do next.
04:20 – Helping the Body Re-Pattern
If the body can learn patterns of protection, it can also develop new patterns.
Healing isn’t simply about forcing symptoms to disappear. It can involve identifying what the body has been adapting to and creating the conditions that allow it to move toward greater regulation, recovery, and balance.
That’s the idea behind Discovery Before Direction.
